![]() While The Watcher dramatises much of the story of real-life victims, Maria and Derek Broaddus, by creating new characters, life events and traumas within their ordeal, it keeps the main frustration of the case in that at the end we still don't know who wrote the letters. But where Dahmer's flaw may be in Murphy re-mining a story we, arguably, already know too much about to feel like it's anything other than grisly voyeurism, The Watcher suffers from the opposite – we don't know enough. Unsurprisingly, this premise makes for a pretty juicy crime mystery, and one that makes sense for a television staple who's always dabbled in the macabre ( American Horror Story) as much as the audacious ( Glee). The series is inspired by the events reported in a 2018 New York Magazine's The Cut article by Reeves Wiedeman, which detailed the entire lifespan of the mystery from beginning to, as Netflix viewers now know, quite unsatisfying end. The notes claimed to be from a mysterious “watcher”, someone tasked with keeping an eye on the property and who seemingly stalked the family. The Watcher, which stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Coolidge and Mia Farrow, relays the true story of a couple who, after moving into a sprawling dream home in the New Jersey suburbs, were tormented by an anonymous person leaving letters addressed to ‘The New Owner’ in their mailbox. Now, only weeks later, his latest series to hit Netflix has arrived in the hopes of further tapping into our voracious hunger for true crime. It follows the crimes and trial of one of the most infamous serial killers in modern consciousness, with some touting it as a gripping insight into one of true crime's most infamous figures, and others calling it a cruel exercise in exploitation. Last week, news hit that almost 200 million people have tuned into Ryan Murphy's Dahmer series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, making it one of the service's most popular debuts in history (according to Netflix, that is). ![]()
